Lucia looked at the fax she had received from Sophia. The pages fluttered between his fingers as his hands shook. She clenched her fists, forced herself to relax, then clenched them again. It was as if all the strength in her body had been drained by what she had just read. Lucia didn’t believe it. She was deeply shocked. She knew it was true. Sophia would never make up a story like this just to scare him. Something like that wasn’t a joke.

Wilma’s sudden visit was starting to make sense now. That must be what she meant. Lucia gave a sad little smile. She finally understood.
